Drawn Lives

Image
By CDH, CAH,  AG, JN For a quick introduction to this assignment; A small group of three people and I were asked to design an art piece for a large wall near our school building. The piece was supposed to relate to the community and we chose its history. Our combined efforts created the proposed art piece below. The next piece to read, the artists statement, was written by the whole group but split up by category.      CDH, CAH, AG, JN. A Changed Place . (2019) Brief history of community: This art piece is for those who aren't aware of the complex history of the Near Northside. For the last week of class, we were researching Near North Side as it was considered the first "bad" neighborhood in Chicago, and we knew it by its other name, "Little Hell." For a brief history it housed Italian & German immigrant in 1820 and had multiple gang wars throughout its lifetime. As different groups such as Puerto Rican and African-American entered the comm...

Dogs on the Island

Recently in my STEAM class known as Population, we have been studying the different ways a species might evolve. Evolution can harden and adapt us to an environment or it can cause us to develop terrifying diseases. The four main ways that we studied include: Natural selection, Genetic drift, Mutation and Gene flow. First, natural selection describes that only the organisms that have traits to survive are likely to pass on their genes. Next, genetic drift says past genes can dominate entire populations or groups based on dominant and recessive gene traits but can then be changed with the introduction of new groups of genes. This has bigger effects on small populations then big populations. Mutation is a mostly unpredictable occurrence that usually has no effect on a person but can still greatly change them; good or bad. Lastly gene flow; I stated that genetic drift can change with the introduction of a new gene pool, that refers to gene flow. Gene flow is when one organism joins a new ...

Hero's Journey

A Crook and A Father Two stories explained by C.D.H. In this unit for my Humanities core class known as Stories, I learned about the Hero’s Journey. The hero’s journey is a set storyline that fits most main characters, meaning: books, movies, T.V. shows and even real life. The journey includes several things: A character is chosen or saute out to go on some kind of adventure; whether it’s emotional or literal, they will face challenges, gain allies, be made new and eventually be able to enjoy the fruits of their labor. You may be wondering why I am going into detail about this and the reason would be because I constructed two “Hero’s Journeys”. Kaz Brekker is a gang lord crook who would do anything for the right reward. Anything good or bad for money, power, or knowledge; nothing and no one was safe around him. He was an orphan who was tricked into poverty. Growing up in the streets and slums of Kerch he learned many things like sleight of hand and lock picking. This practice e...

Fable Fun

Image
In this unit we talked about Aesop's fables, panchatantra and how fables are constructed. I wrote my fable about three animals, a rabbit, a wolf and a squirrel. The rabbit is a trusting and forgetful sort that can't understand that some friends are not real. The wolf is a deceitful, sneaky predator that takes advantage of the young rabbit. The last but most important character is the squirrel who cares about the rabbit but can't get him to understand. In the unit we talked about how fables and short stories usually have a symbol that conveys a meaning of some kind. The symbol in this story is a string that once removed reminded the rabbit what it was supposed to mean. Real Friends Aslo is quietly talking with Grey. They are both standing in a large oak tree. This oak tree sits in the middle of a bright creek, bright because of all the shining stones twinkling in the sun or mirroring the moon. The odd pair of a rabbit and a wolf were good friends, often chatting about w...

Taxonomy

Image
For the last few weeks, I have been learning about how living organisms are classified. Some of the things I have been doing include learning about Linnaeus, the Dichotomous Key and going to see the real animals at the zoo. The most known system of classification is called taxonomy which separates things based on specific attributes. The list of taxa goes Kingdom, Phylum, Class, Order, Family, Genus and Species. For this, I have made a project on the formats of showing classification. First is a visual artwork on my chosen organism, the African Penguin ( Spheniscus demersus ) with its taxonomy. Next, I will show a Venn diagram of how it is similar to other kinds of animals. Lastly, I will give a mathematical description and explanation. Before getting into the science of the African Penguin let me give a description. The African Penguin also known as the "Jackass Penguin" lives on the southern most tip of Africa. It is a flightless bird that only eats fish, only four species...

Origin Story

Image
Recently I have been looking into origin stories of different religions from around the world. These stories have not been limited to the creation of the world but also of individual things. The reason I have looked into these stories is for a class that implements history and English called Stories. During this class I was asked to write my own origin story about anything I wanted. In the end I chose to write about the creation of all living things. In this “Origin Essay” I have tried to use descriptive language in writing. I want to tell about exactly how something looks, how the characters feel and how things might seem if you, the reader were there. The story itself makes me think it could be an actual myth with stories of heroes and monsters to make you love or hate either side. All of seems as if it could be in a theater or arena showing itself on a world stage. I believe it could grow to a story as something so great. Without further introduction here it is Life From Emotion. ...

Where I'm From

Image
This should give a basic idea of where i'm from and how I view it  with a visual representation. The main idea of this painting is to tell about significant things to me from my area. The whole of it is set at sundown next to a road that separates a city restaurant and a music festival held in a field. I have always loved music and I like to sing which made me want to add a musical event. The most recent event I went to had food trucks so that was on my mind when I put one next to the staged field. The other reason I put a food truck on the “canvas” is because I love trying new or delicious foods. That being said I wanted to add a more famous restaurant from Chicago because my family has been going there ever since we came to the city. I love pizza and Chicago is known for it but I can say for certain I didn't do it justice. The reason I wanted to do a painting was because I recently went to a new art gallery. This gallery was based on a neighborhood in Chicago called Little ...
