Thoughtful, Thoughtless Actions

Image
To end this term in my Humanities class "A Nations Argument" we leapt into studying the Constitution and Bill of Rights. This began with how the first settlements decided to create a union and branch away from Europe. That was made clear with the righting of the Constitution which being one, kept us looking at how syllogisms work. Next we looked at the amendments made in the Bill of Rights and people who have had their rights violated. In this action project we were instructed to find a part of the municipal code in our own city that we believe should be changed or "amended."   In my case I chose to pursue a topic that is quite hard to narrow down to one ordinance. In stead I am using an article as the inspiration and a related ordinance as an example.   City of Chicago Flier, 2020 The related ordinance is the "Woodlawn Housing Preservation Ordinance." This is an ordinance that wants to make sure housing prices, rent prices and relocation of residence wi...

Rain Time

This unit in the class "Light, Sound, and Time" we are finishing up the class and the term with time. Time is relative, and from what we know, we have only existed for an extremely brief period in the time of the universe. If all time was assimilated into one calendar year, the time we have existed only lasts the last minutes of the last month of the calendar. Time has been hard to grasp but as we advanced as a whole we have found ways to track time. That leads me into this action project, my class was asked to either create or update some way to tell time. Once we did so, we had to explain and advertise this in the form of a video. I decided to go with the Phil Swift approach for the video but then realized I'm not good at being excited so I decided to take after a favorite influencer of mine, Michael Reeves, as you will see. Please enjoy. (Credit to my friend LM for editing because I don't know how) So I was looking over the assignment given to me a few days ago to...

The Sounds We Create

Image
In the second unit of my promptly named class "Light, Sound, and Time", we took a deeper look into sound and how it works. Usually in my projects, I try to become the teacher to tell you about how to do things for yourself but this time I will be showing you what I learned and hope that I can make enough sense. We started out by asking "what is sound?". Just based on prior knowledge and a little help from the past unit, we decided that sound is a wave. Sound is a wave yes, but what else is it? Sound is more than a transfer of vibrations, at least for humans. Take music for example, no matter what it is it has an effect. Whether it's a beautiful melody, a loud guitar solo, or literally nothing. During the unit we talked about music constantly. Through the middle of the unit we talked about the math behind how fast sound is and can be. Believe it or not, but sound is affected by everything in its surroundings. Sound travels fastest through solid matter, slowest th...

Us, and Others

"The Importance of Psychology" Owlcation, 2021 As I am typing this we are wrapping up our first unit in "A Nations Argument." This class was a collage of people declaring their independence on different levels through out the history of America; The beginning, when it was several colonies and groups of native Americans, to the Declaration of Independence, to what it even means to declare independence, and now, where we students have been asked to make our own declaration. A declaration of study to tell our teaches exactly what we want, need, and deserve to learn about.  School, from kindergarten to high school, seems to be an introduction to our world. Slowly progressing in the intensity and amount of knowledge to be passed on to later generations to secure a future for other generations to come. It's the start of us. There has always been this kind of start, either in an actual school or learning in life. In America, which is mostly where we talked about, we h...

Light Work

Image
In the first unit of my new class "Light, Sound and Time" (LST) we spent most of our time looking at light and waves though again, we are still in quarantine so some things were a bit complicated to communicate. First we took a look at the class as a whole, talking about light, how fast it is/ its "unique" properties(wave particle duality), the visible spectrum and the electromagnetic spectrum as a whole. Then throughout the class started answering questions. "Why do we see things with certain colors?" Well white light is shined onto objects and the color we see is the one that said object reflects the most. "Would you see your reflection if you were traveling at the speed of light?" Even though there are plenty of theories, this question proposed by Albert Einstein can not be answered yet. "What are reflection and refraction?" Reflection is light bouncing back in a direction based on the angle of the shined light; and refraction is the...

"Im Fine"

In the final action project I will be posting from the first term of my junior year, I focused on the current topic of mental health in decline. Let me give more context; This unit has been full of ups, downs, and everything else. From interviews of potential alderman to reading about incorrect use of city funds to MLK and the freedom marches. The main focus with all of these topics was the influence and perspective of "op-eds". We started by talking to a man considered young when considering he tried to become to an alderman against a long-standing incumbent, his name, Ugo Okere. Ugo didn't appreciate the way his ward was being operated so he took it into his own hands to change for the better. We then reviewed an op-ed posted by Troy LaRaviere and looked at how op-eds are constructed. Probably the biggest thing we did though was meet in person for an FE to the memorial in Marquette Park, Chicago, for the freedom marches of 1965-6. With that very quick description of th...

Two Sides Of The Shore

Image
Well... I had an interesting term that's for sure. I had my longest ever unit in a class and now this was my shortest. In this unit for rhetoric we had a total of three classes. Though we didn't learn about many new concepts, we attempted to convert old ones to a new format. This is "RhetorART" an art piece done by yours truly in an attempt to represent a current world problem: Lack of clean water or water in general. But I cant leave it there and go into my artists statement because I haven't hit my teachers minimum word count for the intro, so to describe the project, my class was asked to create an art piece representing a major world issue and explain the rhetoric behind it. Two Shores, CH 2020   This piece was made with the intention of bringing more awareness to a lack of knowledge. The information that needs to be more widely recognized is that many people take most things for granted. Things like easily accessible food, electricity, freedom of speech and ...
