"Im Fine"

In the final action project I will be posting from the first term of my junior year, I focused on the current topic of mental health in decline. Let me give more context; This unit has been full of ups, downs, and everything else. From interviews of potential alderman to reading about incorrect use of city funds to MLK and the freedom marches. The main focus with all of these topics was the influence and perspective of "op-eds". We started by talking to a man considered young when considering he tried to become to an alderman against a long-standing incumbent, his name, Ugo Okere. Ugo didn't appreciate the way his ward was being operated so he took it into his own hands to change for the better. We then reviewed an op-ed posted by Troy LaRaviere and looked at how op-eds are constructed. Probably the biggest thing we did though was meet in person for an FE to the memorial in Marquette Park, Chicago, for the freedom marches of 1965-6. With that very quick description of th...

Two Sides Of The Shore

Image
Well... I had an interesting term that's for sure. I had my longest ever unit in a class and now this was my shortest. In this unit for rhetoric we had a total of three classes. Though we didn't learn about many new concepts, we attempted to convert old ones to a new format. This is "RhetorART" an art piece done by yours truly in an attempt to represent a current world problem: Lack of clean water or water in general. But I cant leave it there and go into my artists statement because I haven't hit my teachers minimum word count for the intro, so to describe the project, my class was asked to create an art piece representing a major world issue and explain the rhetoric behind it. Two Shores, CH 2020   This piece was made with the intention of bringing more awareness to a lack of knowledge. The information that needs to be more widely recognized is that many people take most things for granted. Things like easily accessible food, electricity, freedom of speech and ...

The Icy Roads Ahead

Instead of a third unit we had an extended second unit to end the term; We made sure to use the extra time to the fullest. We filled our time studying a number of math and science concepts including speed conversions, derivative functions, Newtons laws, energy types, gear ratios, almost everything with circles and more. In the second unit we also studied bikes, how they work, what kinds there are, and made several FEs out of the study; We went to Earth Rider, a bikes shop on the north side. And met virtually with a Divvy representative. In both cases we were able to talk about bikes in completely different settings and scales. As we wrap up the term we were asked to design a bike for a specific person. I worked with a partner on this project who helped make the whole thing easier so go look at their blog post as well: (input Cs post). The first thing we did was identify our persona and their needs; 14 year old Karen lives in Bandff, Canada. She needs to make a 3 mile trip to schoo...

Tools: Upgraded

Image
In the first STEAM class of quarantine, "Design and engineering", we have studied basic tools, advancement of tools, several design processes, math concepts surrounding materialization of said designs, and the unexpected opportunity to have not only one but two FEs this unit. For this action project we were asked to design garden tools that benefit the elderly as much as possible. With the help of my partner CJH, we started our process with picking a tool to redesign, we chose garden shears. The next step was to have an interview with my Grammie; An elderly woman who as been gardening for years. We discussed several questions, mostly about tools and her experience with them. Coincidentally she owns a pair of shears, so obviously I asked her about them. She told me "They are hard to keep sharp and are sometimes much to short or to big." When we went to revise our ideas, thinking empathically, see to properly understand the physical hardships of the elderly we must t...

A Question For You

Image
In this new school year, during the COVID-19 pandemic, many students have had to commit to an online learning experience. For many students, myself included, it has been a struggle. In one of the first classes I am taking this year, "The Art Of Rhetoric" our first action project has been issued. We studied about the appeals ethos, logos, and pathos; We talked about how Christopher Columbus was actually a genocidal maniac in the first chapter of Howard Zinn's "A Peoples History Of America;" And we talked about how to implement the appeals by reading and watching different political speeches. In this AP we were instructed to record a video of ourselves advising a political official in how to answer a question. The question in mind is: Is it acceptable to use movements like BLM in the political setting? I will be filming a video with the premise being, "Joe Biden was just asked this question and I am running through what you need to know to answer." Joe ...

A House To Keep

Image
Drama: "A House To Keep" (Dtcab.com, 2020) As the school year ends, this will (hopfully) be the last AP that I do in quarantine.  Despite difficulty, my class and I have worked rigorously through several production scripts including A Dolls House, The Taming Of The Shrew, and A Raisin In The Sun! We had two field experience guests come and speak to us. The first was Ragina Holoway and the second was Joel Hamernick. Unfortunately I was unable to be in class for Ms Holoway but I was able to be there for the interview of Mr Hamernick. He spoke to us about the history concerning ARITS (A Raisin In The Sun), how he lives near their original house, history of red lining, and exactly what it meant for them to be moving into this white neighborhood. In this action project we were asked to make a letter for Walter from one of the other characters, I chose Beneatha. Some writing was done intentionally for character speech purposes.    Dear Walter, I know I don't write ...

"Blood Eye"

In my second class during the Covid-19 pandemic lockdown, we studied doctors vs healers, oaths, cell theory, cell anatomy, conic sections, surgery types, and we had two different online interviews. We had challenges due to purely online learning, but we tried our hardest to make it work the best we could. For this action project, we were asked to research a surgery and construct a presentation on it including an interview, small history of cells, and the potential outcomes of said surgery. The surgery of my choice is called a Vitrectomy; A removal of liquid from the eye.
